Chiropractic Adjustment
A Manipulation or Chiropractic adjustment is the most common/powerful therapeutic procedure performed by chiropractic physicians.
The purpose of the manipulation is to improve biomechanics or joint mobility by manually applying a specific, controlled force into joints that have become restricted in movement as a result of soft tissue injury. Most people associate soft tissue injury with a single traumatic event, such as an accident, fall or improperly lifting a heavy object. However, soft tissue injury can also result from repetitive stresses over an extended period of time. These stresses can include sitting or standing with poor posture, overusing “too tight” or “too weak” muscles and even stress. In all of these situations, these injured or weakened tissues can undergo numerous physical and chemical changes. This in turn can cause inflammation, pain and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation of these affected joints and tissues improves mobility, decreasing these physical and chemical changes, and thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness. This improves function and allows the tissues to heal properly.
Graston Technique/IASTM
Graston Technique or IASTM stands for instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation and is a rehabilitation technique that is commonly used for sprains, strains, and other soft tissue injuries. IASTM is a type of soft tissue work that is used to help muscles to relax and heal after injury. A practitioner uses an instrument to break up adhesions and increase blood flow to muscles. Dr. Vanoni uses Graston technique to help patients in Niagara Falls and Buffalo, NY region.
Functional Movement Taping/Therapy
The primary purpose of kinesio taping is to not only provide support for joints and muscles, but also to aid in the elimination of pain and increase both lymph drainage and blood flow.
Since kinesio taping has demonstrated a positive effect on the vascular, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems, it has been shown through research to assist with healing, increase range of motion, and decrease the symptoms of several conditions. As mentioned above, kinesio taping has been used by several famous athletes, but it is more commonly used by individuals involved with manual labor, people undergoing rehabilitation, people who frequently engaged in exercise, and high school and college athletes.
Cryotherapy/Heat Therapy
Ice packs and moist heat are at the facility to give patient more comfort to areas that are being treated.
Activator Technique/ProAdjustor
This is another form of adjusting the spinal segments. This is a gentle impulse adjustment for patients with osteoporosis or for patients that do not like that popping sound they get from an adjustment.
Soft Tissue Techniques
Soft tissue work is the application of force to muscles and other soft tissues and is similar to a massage. At Vanoni Chiropractic we use a variety of soft tissue techniques including myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and IASTM to get patients out of pain and back to doing what they love.
The overall encompassing idea for many of these theories is that working on the soft tissue helps to loosen up tight musculature which reduces pain and stiffness.
Traction
Traction is a passive therapy that is often used on patients with neck or low back pain. A patient will either manually or through the use of a device have an axial force applied to their body that in essence stretches them out.
One way in which traction works is in taking pressure off of the disk in both the lumbar and cervical spine. This can help patients get out of pain that is being caused by disk injuries. Another way in which traction works is that it stretches the muscles and eventually the elongated stretching time helps the muscles relax. This can be beneficial for all sorts of muscular injuries.
